Education technology, or ed tech, is designed and used to facilitate learning and improve student performance and engagement.
Ed tech has grown over the last decade, as smart classrooms pop up in schools across the country and tablets and laptops become the norm in classrooms. The size of the ed tech market was nearly $90 billion in 2020 and is expected to grow by nearly 20% from 2021 to 2028, according to Grand View Research. The pandemic only accelerated these trends as technology became a lifeline for millions of students participating in remote learning. Nearly 93% of American households with school-age kids had children who participated in some form of distance learning, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
While ed tech can help to improve the learning experience—along with the skills and experience of dedicated teachers—it isn't a cure-all. Teachers, students and schools also need resources and support to improve how they use these tools.
